Suppose a certain baseball diamond is a square 91 feet on a side. The pitching rubber is located 59.5feet from home plate on a line joining home plate and second base. How far is it from the pitching rubber to first base?

Solution

by the Pythagorean Theorem, the distance from home to second is 91*sqrt2 = 128.7
so the distance (b) is 128.7 - 59.5 = 69.2 ft
center of field from pitching rubber =128.7/2 - 59.5 = 4.85
use Pythagorus again (a) =sqrt (64.35^2 + 4.85^2) = 64.53
