5 drops of sheeps blood are added to (4) test tubes.
(1) with a 5mL 10% NaCl solution
(2) with a 5mL 0.9% NaCl
(3) has 5mL of distilled water
(4) has 5mL sucrose solution
Formulate a hypotheses: scientific, Ho, and Ha regarding your expectations for the outcome to the blood cells in each tube.
Solution
the hypothesis Ho is regarded as the null hypothesis which shows the negative statement and the Ha is the alternative hypothesis which shows opposite statement than null.
1) - the solute concentration of NaCl is more on the outside, therefore the water will move away from cell and cell will shrink.
2.) the solute concentration of NaCl is isotonic to the cell therefore not much change would be noticed in the volume of the cell.
3) when the cells are put in pure water, the water will enter the cells and cause the cells to burst known as hemolysis, this happens because water inside the cell is less than pure water .
4) the concentration of sucrose is more on the outside than in the cell therefore the water would again leave the cell and cause the cells to shrink
therefore the Ho should be :
the cells would not shrink in tube 1, they would not remain the same in tube 2, they would not burst in tube 3 and they would not shrink in tube 4.
and H1 should be :
the cells would shrink in tube 1, they would remain the same in tube 2, they would burst in tube 3, and they would shrink in tube 4.
