Twenty pairs of points yielded a correlation coefficient of r= 0.4. If alpha=.05, which of the following statements is correct if Ho:r=0 ? (Do not calculate a t-values. Use the r value.) (Also use the PPMC table from the internet)
A) The correlation coefficient is to the right of the critical value, accept the null hypothesis
B) The correlation coefficient is to the right of the critical value, reject the null hypothesis.
C)The correlation coefficient is to the left of the critical value, reject the null hypothesis.
D)The correlation coefficient is to the left of the critical value, accept the null hypothesis.
E) None of the above
Solution
From PPMC table for degree of freedom is df=n-2=18 and level of significance 0.05, the critical value is 0.444. And our tets statistics (r) is 0.4 which is less than critical value so we fail to reject the null hypothesis at 5% level of significance. That is there is no significant correlation. So option D is correct.
