Conventional panels are constructed using 7075-T6 Aluminium alloy with each panel weighing 500 kg. JustWinglt has decided to use a 60 v/v % boron fiber reinforced Al-Li alloy composite to make the panels instead. Calculate the potential savings from the reduced weight assuming each kg saved reduces fuel consumption by 2000 l per year. Cost of fuel is $10/l.

Given, The weight of the product whrn made with 7075-T6 Aluminium alloy is 500 kg, and the density is 2.7g/cm^3.

Therefore, the volume of the product = 500/2700 = 0.1851 m^3.

Given it is made with 60 v/v % of Boron fibres reinforced with Al-Li alloy , i.e, The total volume consists of 60% Boron fibres and 40% of Al-Li alloy.

The volume of Boron fibres = 0.6*0.1851 = 0.11111 m^3.

The weight of Boron fibres = 0.11111*2360 =262.222 kg.

The volume of Al-Li alloy = 0.4*0.1851 =0.07404 m^3.

The weight of Al-Li Alloy = 0.07404*2500 = 185.1 kg.

The total weight = 262.22+185.1 = 447.322 kg.

The reduction in weight of the component = 500-446.32 = 52.67kg.

Given , for the reduction in one g of weight the amount of fuel saved per year = 2000litres. so the fuel saved for reduction in the 52.67 kg is 105,356 litres.

Given, the cost of the fuel is $10.

The total potential savings per year is $1053,560.
