Selection of heat exchangers

1. Analyze the application such as the fluids, heat load, temperatures and rate of flow of fluids.

2. Select aluminium, copper or stainless steel heat exchager based on fluid compatibility. Aluminium is normally used for oils, copper for water and stainless steel for corrosive fluids.

3.Calculate the initial temperature difference and required performance capability.

4.Referring appropriate performance graphs for various commercially available heat exchangers, select the appropriate heat exchanger.

Series - parallel fluid flow

In parallel connection, the heat load is shared equall by the individual heat exchangers. More common in liquid to liquid type.

Series coneections are common in gas to liquid heat exchangers. They are capable of bearing heavy thermal loads for a short duration or fluctuations in heat load.
