Formulate but do not solve the following exercise as a linear programming problem. Deluxe River Cruises operates a fleet of river vessels. The fleet has two types of vessels: A type-A vessel has 40 deluxe cabins and 165 standard cabins, whereas a type-B vessel has 75 deluxe cabins and 115 standard cabins. Under a charter agreement with Odyssey Travel Agency, Deluxe River Cruises is to provide Odyssey with a minimum of 265 deluxe and 510 standard cabins for their 15-day cruise in May. It costs $40,000 to operate a type-A vessel and $59,000 to operate a type-B vessel for that period. How many of each type of vessel (x type-A and y type-B) should be used in order to keep the operating costs to a minimum, C?

Solution

Let the number of type-A vessel be x and the number of type-B vessel be y.
total cost,C= $40,000*x + $59,000*y <----Answer

Deluxe Cabin= 40x + 75y
So,
40x+75y >= 265 <---------- Answer

Standard Cabin = 165x + 115y
So,
165x + 115y >= 510 <----------Answer
