Grocery selfcheck out Many grocery stores have adopted selfs
Grocery self-check out: Many grocery stores have adopted self-service check-out process. Likewise, many airport check-in counters now use self-service kiosks to speed up the check-in process. Do they actually help you get through the process more quickly?
Suppose a grocery stores (like the Meijer in Mishawaka) uses a conventional check out system with 5 employees (cashier) to serve customers check-out groceries. The mean inter-arrival time of customers is 1 minute, and the mean processing time for each cashier is 4 minutes. To simplify the calculation, let’s assume that both the arrival process and check-out process have a CV=1. (We know that a more elaborated data collection project can find out what the real CVs should be.)
Now suppose that this store decides to replace the above conventional system by complete self-service lanes. The store is experimenting it by opening up 10 lanes equipped with self-service stations without using any cashier, except staffing one technician to help trouble shoot any problem. Because most customers are inexperienced in processing the check-out, the mean processing time now becomes twice longer (=8 minutes). The variation of their processing times also gets twice longer, so CVp stays at 1.
Compare the two systems and report which system has better utilization of the machine, time spend on waiting, length of the line, and average time a customer needs to spend from start joining a line until the check-out completes.
Which system would you prefer as a customer? If you end up with spending a bit longer in self-check-out, would you necessarily feel it is longer if you do not record the time with your watch or cell phone? Suggest five things that a grocery store can do to make customers waiting in line feel (or perceive) that the waiting time is shorter (than it actually is).
Solution
Self service is one of the best method to expanding their production by reducing labor costs.Focusing on a particular self check out within the grocery and supermarket industry, self service is to reduce the need for and dependence upon labor while maintaining overall productivity.Supermarket save labor cost and its provide value for consumers.
The length of a line can be either limited or unlimited. A queue is limited when it cannot, either by law or because of physical restrictions, increase to an infinite length. he length of a line can be
