Why does the density of sand matter in steel casting?
Solution
In steel casting made from sand, the density of sand is one of the important criteria. Becuase when the metal solidifies the contracts and thus produce a squeezing action on the layers of sand. Now, If the density of sand is non-uniform then it may result in the sliding of the layers of sand over each other and ultimately distortion of the sand. If that would have happened, then the surface finish of the steel casting is also poor. So, to eliminate these effects, the sand casting must have uniform density.
