Based on a patient’s symptoms and some laboratory tests, a patient is diagnosed as having insufficient dopamine release from a processing area dealing with movement. The patient is prescribed L-dopa and although the movement problems improve, the patient starts to “hear dead people”. The dose of the patient’s medication is adjusted and the patient becomes essentially symptom free. What were the patient’s initially symptoms? What area was affected? What is the normal function of this area? What would be the name given for the original diagnosis of this condition? What name could be given to the condition that was induced by the medication (the one that made the patient hear things that were not there)? What system did this belong to?

Solution

As patient having problem related to movement including insufficient dopamine release then this condition is called as PARKINSON\'S disease.

Symptoms

1. Slow movement

2. Tremor

3. Rigidity

4. Impairment in speech

5. Dementia

Area affected

Mainly in this condition a region of midbrain called as SUBSTANTIA NIGRA is affected mainly due to death of dopaminergic neuron.

Normal functioning of this area is in movement, learning i.e. memory, motor planning and reward seeking.

This condition is called as PARKINSON\'S.

After L dopa treatment patient hear dead people, may be due to excessive dose of L dopa or its side effect which include stimulant psychosis, hallucinations and feeling of very high level of emotion.

But here we need very firm and accurate data as patient having low dopamine release then may SCIZOPHRENIA symptoms also develop.

All this condition belong to psychosis disorder.

Based on a patient’s symptoms and some laboratory tests, a patient is diagnosed as having insufficient dopamine release from a processing area dealing with move
