Define effectiveness of a heat exchanger. Which factors tend to increase the effectiveness of a heat exchanger?
Solution
Solution :
Effectiveness of a heat exchanger is nothing but the ratio of actual heat transfer rate to maximum possible heat transfer rate. This is similar to the efficiency of an engine except we are considering heat transfer rate here. The significance is that effectiveness says what percent of the heat input is actually transferred through the heat exchanger at the output.
Effectivess= actual heat transfer/ maximum heat transfer
The factors which will make an increase in effectiveness is nothing but to say the factors which will increase the heat transfer.
1. Less amount of fouling
2. Higher surface area
3. Higher temperature difference between inlet and outlet fluid
