Explain how energy flows through an ecosystem? Include the concepts of food chains, food webs, trophic levels, and pyramids.
Solution
Answer:- Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional i. e., energy from sun (photonic enrgy) is captured by plants and is converted into chemical energy of food. From plantsvthis energy gets transferred to trophic level second (herbivore) then to third trophic level (carnivore) etc. There is no reverse flow of energy. The ultimate source of energy in an ecosystem is sun. There is always loss of energy from one trophic level to another almost 90% (this means the energy transfer efficiency of ecosystem is almost 10%). This sequence of one eating and being eaten is called food chain and the Web of food chains is called food Web. In nature there are food webs that actually exist rather than simple food chains.
