Discuss recent evidence indicating that adipose tissue plays a role in the induction of inflammation. How is this mechanism associated with insulin resistance?

Solution
Now a days obesity became a major contributor of non-communicable diseases (eg. diabetes) worldwide. The adipose tissues are active endocrine organ that harbours various immune cells like macrophages. In adipose tissues when M1 pro-inflammatory macrophage infiltration increases, it leads to activation of other immune cells. This affects lipid metabolism by affecting mitochondrial functioning which leads to Reactive oxygen species formation.
The pro inflammatory cytokines produce during this inflammation interferes with insulin signalling. That’s why increase in body mass (obesity) leads to insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes mellitus). Insulin resistance is a diabetic problem in which cells fail to respond to insulin.
