A segment of the femoral artery of a patient is replaced by an arterial graft. The change in radius to a change in pulse pressure was measured in the graft as well as in the femoral artery on the other side to yield the following data. Compute the compliance at the mean arterial pressure of 100 mmHg for both the artery and the graft. Express your answers in units of dynes/cm^2. Would you expect to have problems with intimal hyperplasia with this graft within 5-10 years? Why?

Solution

compliance for artery= delta(pressure)/delta(volume)

delta(pressure)=100mm=10cm

radius=4mm=0.4

new radius=4+0.15*4=4.6 mm=0.46 cm

compliance=10/0.46=21.73 dynes/cm^2

compliance for graft= delta(pressure)/delta(volume)

delta(pressure)=100mm=10cm

radius=5mm=0.5cm

new radius=5+0.1*5=5.5mm=0.55 cm

compliance=10/0.55=18.18 dynes/cm^2

yes we can expect problems to arise with this graft as artery radius will keep icnreasing leadint o a lower compliance and it willkeepreducing which can be unsafe for the patient with time to maintain blood flow.
