ELISA is one of the most popular techniques which can be used to detect the apoptotic cells in the body. As the fragmentation of the DNA is one of the event which takes place in the early apoptotic cells..!! So this fragmented DNA can be analyzed by the ELISA..

In early apoptotic cells the fragmentation of DNA followed by the release of nucleosome in the cytoplasm which can be detected by ELISA.

So in this test, the pair of specific monoclonal antibodies of ELISA specifically binds to two epitopes of nucleosome present in the cytoplasm which is being released due to fragmentation of DNA by apoptotic cells..!!
