For homework 8 you were asked to evaluate the null hypothesis, mu0 = 0, against the alternative, mu1 0, using data collected on pre- and post-treatment urine flow (n=10). The test suggested there was no difference in urine flow before and after treatment, however, this conclusion was the result of the test you were asked to conduct. Had you been asked to test the null against the directional alternative, mu1 > 0, you would have arrived at a different conclusion (see homework 8 key). For this question, you must evaluate the power of a one-sided and two-sided test to detect a mean difference in pre- and post-treatment flow rate of 3 ml/sec. Use the results to explain the different conclusions noted in the homework 8 key. Note sigma = 4.62. Also, recall that phi() is the standard-normal cumulative probability, hence if you\'re using a table of probabilities, pay attention to the shaded area of the distribution. We\'ve gone over this several times in class. Power formula (two-sided): 1 - beta = phi(-z1-alpha/2 + |effect size| squareroot n/ sigma) Power formula (one-sided): 1 - beta = phi(-z1-infinity + |effect size| squareroot n/ sigma)
