The three of the most common machining processes are Milling, Drilling and Turning:

• Turning is the most common machining process performed on a lathe. In this,a single point cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece to form a cylindrical shape. The cutting tool is fed linearly and in a direction parallel to the axis of the workpiece\'s rotation. The lathe provides the power for rotating the workpiece, feed the tool at the specified rate and also cut the workpiece at the necessary depth. Lathes are designed solely for turning operations, so that precise control of the cutting results in tight tolerances.

• Milling is also a fundamental powered metal cutting processes. Milling operations are those involving a rotating multiple-cutting-edge tool which is moved slowly relative to the work so as to generate a plane or straight surface. Milling is versatile for a basic machining process, but because the milling set up has so many degrees of freedom, that is why the milling is usually less accurate than turning or grinding unless especially rigid fixturing is enforced. There are two forms of milling: peripheral milling and face milling

• Drilling operations are the most commonly used process to create round holes, usually by means of a rotating tool (drill bit) that has two cutting edges. Holes are produced or refined by bringing a rotating cutter with cutting edges at the lower extremity into contact with the workpiece. Drilling operations are done basically in drill presses but sometimes on lathes or mills. Two types of holes can be made: first one through holes, in which the drill exits the opposite side of the work and second, blind holes, in which the drill does not exit.
