Consider the series RLC circuit shown below. Assume it is driven by an AC voltage source at a frequency of 5 kHz. The total series impedance that the source sees will be 100 + j Ohms.

Solution

f=5000 hz

w=2*pi*f=*pi*5000 radians

Xl=jwL=j2*pi*5000*(5/pi)*10^-3=j50 ohms.

Xc=1/(jwc)=1/(j2*pi*5000*(10/pi)*10^-6)=-j10 ohms.

total impedance=100+j(50-10)=[100+j40] ohms.
