A boat floating in fresh water displaces water weighing 325

A boat floating in fresh water displaces water weighing 32.5 kN. (a) What is the weight of the water that this boat displaces when floating in salt water of density 1.10 x 10^3 kg/m^3? (b) What is the difference between the volume of fresh water displaced and the volume of salt water displaced (V/fresh \' l/salt)? (Take the density of fresh water to be 998 kg/m^3.)

Solution

a) The weight displaced is the same

= 32.5 kN

--------------------------------------------------

b) Fresh water displaced = 32500 / (9.81 * 998) = 3.32 m3

Salt water displaced = 32500 / (9.81 * 1.10 * 103) = 3.01 m3

Difference = 0.31 m3
