Think about the pros and cons of each type of support of excavation your learned. Write a one page summary of which support of excavation method is your preferred method and why is it better than the other choices?

Excavation support refers to an engineered solution designed to stabilize an excavation. Excavation support is generally required for excavations in excess of 6 ft or excavation that are not sloped.

Usually the cheapest and simplest way to support an excavation is to slope back the sides of the excavation to the acceptable angle of repose.

But the subject of excavation support becomes much more complicated when deep excavations take place and there is no room to slope back the soil to the required angle of repose

In case of congested urban areas I prefer Secant piles method support

The advantages of secant pile walls are that, compared to sheet piling methods, they can provide greater wall stiffness. They are also capable of being installed in low headroom and in difficult ground conditions.

The disadvantages are that vertical tolerances may be difficult to achieve for deep piles, as is total waterproofing in the joints between piles. They will also generally cost more than sheet piles.

Reciprocal support is one typical secant pile support, it not only increases the load-bearing capacity of the vertical member and support structure but also causes a considerable reduction of the deformations in the vertical member and therefore reduces the settlement and probable deformations in the soil behind the wall. This issue is critical in cases where very important buildings are adjacent to the excavation.

These factors cause the application of each method to be associated with some limitations when used in different projects, such that all methods cannot be applied for all projects.

Therefore, after investigating and presenting all methods of excavation stabilization, the methods must be compared to each other based on the structural, economic and construction considerations to select an appropriate method for excavation stabilization.
