A column with pinned ends for both axes must be selected to carry a compressive dead load of 95 kips and compressive live load of 285 kips. The column is 16 ft. long and is part of a braced frame No intermediate lateral braces are provided. Determine the factored loads (P, by LRFD and Pa by ASD) and select the lightest weight W12 section with Fy 50 ksi to support these loads. Use the design tables given in the AISC Manual: a. LRFD b. ASD

Solution

compressive dead load= 95 kips

compressive live load = 285 kips

LRFD design load = 1.2*95 + 1.6*285=570 kips

ASD design load = 95+285=380 kips

effective length = 16 ft

lightest W12 section needed for LRFD = W12x65

lightest w12 section needed for ASD = W12x65

A column with pinned ends for both axes must be selected to carry a compressive dead load of 95 kips and compressive live load of 285 kips. The column is 16 ft
