Carbon dioxide is heated to 2800 K at a constant pressure of 2 atm and dissociates to the following reaction:

                                    CO2                  CO + ½O2

Determine the equilibrium composition where CO2, CO, and O2 are simultaneously present.

Solution

>> At Equilibrium,

CO2 <=> CO + 0.5 O2

So, Mass of CO2 present = 44 g

Mass of CO = 28 g

and, Mass of O2 = 32 g

So, Total Mass = 44 + 28 + 32 = 104 g

So, Mass wise,

Composition of CO2 = 44/104 = 0.423 = 42.3 %

Composition of CO = 28/104 = 0.0.269 = 26.9 %

Composition of O2 = 32/104 = 0.3076 = 30.76 %
