Suppose that a solution containing a drug enters the liver at rate of 0.001 cm^3/s with a concentration of k g/cm^3. assume that the volume of the liver is 1500 cm^3 and that the solution leaves the liver at the same rate it entered. Find the value of k that would yield .5 g of the drug in the liver after 1 hour. You may assume that there is initially no drug in the liver. Provide you answer to three decimal places.
Suppose that a solution containing a drug enters the liver at rate of 0.001 cm^3/s with a concentration of k g/cm^2. Assume that the volume of the liver is 1500 cm^3 and that the solution leaves the liver at the same rate it entered. Find the value of k that would yield 0.5 g of the drug in the liver after 1 hour. You may assume that there is initially no drug in the liver. Provide your answer to three decimal places.Solution
Since the concentration of drug leaving the liver is not given , it is assumed that all the drug accumulates in the liver .
Amount of Drug accumulating in liver = Concentration * Rate of Solution inflow = k * 0.001 g/s = 0.001k g/s
Drug accumulation in 1 hour or 3600sec = 0.001k * (3600) g = 3.6k grams
Required Drug accumulation should be equal to 5 grams
=> 3.6k = .5
=> k = 5/36 g/cm3
