1. When A is a mxn matrix, and X is a nx1 matrix, AX is a mx 1 matrix and so is B which Rm. Let us now look at the equation ATX = BT . Now, since A is a mxn matrix, AT is a nxm matrix. Since X is a nx1 matrix, we must have n = m if the matrix ATX has to exist. Then ATX is a nx1 matrix. Since B is a mx1 matrix, BT is a 1xm matrix. Since ATX = BT , the dimensions of ATX has to be same as that of BT. Therefore, m = n = 1. Then, the equation ATX = BT is a single linear equation of the form ax = b which has a unique solution x = - b/a if a 0
