Solution

22. If you were Sarah or Michael, what would you choose to do? Why?

(a) Not have children.

(b) Adopt children.

(c) Get pregnant and continue with the pregnancy no matter what.

(d) Get pregnant, test the embryo within 9 weeks via chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and terminate if the embryo has CF.

(e) Undergo in vitro fertilization by harvesting eggs, fertilizing them, and screening the embryos for CF prior to implantation.

Answer:

It will be best to go for the option (e), as this will allow us to screen all the potential mutation in the embroys prior to the implantation. It will allow us to be sure that child will not contain prominent mutations (25 recommended by for Cystic Fibrosis American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG)). Child could be still carrier (depending on how senstive the test are), but he/she will not show the symtoms of the dieases.

This option is better than (d), where CF genotyping test are done after getting pregnant and would have to terminate preganancy if tests are positive. This procedure might leads to more complications.
