Describe the construction of a commutator.

Solution

Ans)

First we understand the function of commutator then we will go on to the details of its construction

The commutator function in electric motors and electrical generators is that it periodically reverses the current direction between the rotor and the external circuit

Commutator consists of a cylinder composed of multiple metal contact segments on the rotating armature of the machine. These segments are called commutator segments which are generally made of copper. Each conducting segment of the commutator is insulated from adjacent segments with insulating material like mica etc

Electrical contacts called (brushes) made of a soft conductive material like carbon press against the commutator with the help of spring mechanism, making sliding contact with successive segments of the commutator as it rotates

The windings on the armature are connected to the commutator segments.

So current will flow from the winding coils to the commutator segments to the brushes and to the external circuit in sequence
