Explain why a Sc atom is larger than an Ag atom (hint – it relates to the outer shell electrons).

Determine the bonding type between the following types of atoms:
Cr-V, Si-C, He-Ne, Li-Br, Al-N

Solution

As you go across the periodic table, the nuclear charge of the atom increases, this means that the outer electrons which define the van der Waal\'s radius are more strongly attracted to the nucleus. Furthermore d- orbitals aren\'t very good at shielding the outer electrons from the attracting of the nucleus so the are even more strongly attracted so Ag will be more contracted known as lanthanide contraction.Hence Ag will be smaller than Sc atom.

Cr-V = Quintuple bond

Si-C = Covalent Bond

He-Ne = Interstellar Bond

Li-Br = Ionic Bond

Al-N = Covalent Bond
