Solution

2r = x

where r is the radius of the circle.

r = x/2

Area of the circle = (x/2)2 = x2/4.

4l = 17-x

where l is the length of the side of the square.

l = (17-x)/4

Area of the square = l2

Net area = (17-x)2/16

total area = x2/4 +  (17-x)2/16

A(x) = x2/4 +  (17-x)2/16

A\'(x) = x/2 + [-(17-x)/8]

A\'(x) = 0,  x/2 + [-(17-x)/8] = 0

8x - 2(17-x) = 0

8x + 2x - 34 = 0

x = 34/(8+2) = 17/(4+).

The wire should be cut so that 7.476 feet are used for the circle and 9.524 feet are used for the square.

The radius of the circle = 1.190 feet

Each side of the square = 2.381 feet
