a. In metallurgy the grain is defined by a boundary of a grain, at higher temperatures the boundary of the grain increases in a material. The grain growth proceeds by local curvature of the grain boundary.

b. When we sharpen a knife the boundary of the crystals are enlarged due to the heat produced by the friction between the knife and the grinding stone, Hence the edge where grinding occurs are made thinner. And thus the knife is sharpened.
