For each of the random variables listed decide whether or no

For each of the random variables listed, decide whether or not the random variable has a binomial distribution. In each case, answer yes or no, then justify why, if the answer is yes state n and p.

(a) Four six sided dice are rolled at the same time. X = the sum of the four numbers which land face up on the four dice. (I said no here, but I\'m not sure if that\'s correct.)

(b) Y= the number of heads tossed in 1000 tosses of a fair coin. ( I said yes here brecause there are only two options and, i said n is 1000 and p is .5)

Solution

Binomial Experiment-
A binomial experiment (also known as a Bernoulli trial) is a statistical experiment that has the following properties:
The experiment consists of n repeated trials.
Each trial can result in just two possible outcomes. We call one of these outcomes a success and the other, a failure.
The probability of success, denoted by P, is the same on every trial.
The trials are independent; that is, the outcome on one trial does not affect the outcome on other trials.

a) No, since it has many possible outcomes

b) Yes, we can sure here it has only 2 possible outcomes for every trial
