Identify whether each item would increase or decrease stroke
Identify whether each item would increase or decrease stroke volume.
Solution
The stroke volume refers to the amount of blood pumped through the heart per stroke so as to meet the enhanced requirements of the body for oxygen and nutrients, or increases under stress/stimulus, adrenal secretion or disease. Various factors involved in up- or down- regulation of stroke volume can be segregated as below:
Stroke volume increase: Sympathetic nervous system, acute exercise, increased preload, increased heartrate, dehydration, increasing contractibility, stress, increasing EDV
Stroke volume decrease: Parasympathetic nervous system, increased afterload, decreased venous return
