What is an imprinting control region (ICR) and how does it regulate the expression of imprinted genes in an imprinted cluster?
Solution
imprinting control region (ICR) is a chromosomal region which acts, in a methylation-sensitive way, to determine whether the imprinted genes are expressed or not according to the parent from which the gene derived. Imprinted gene clusters are regulated by cis-acting sequences that function over a long-range depicted here as imprinting control regions which carry methylation imprints differentially acquired in the male and female germ-lines.
