Model a pollen grain as a sphere of carbon 012 mm in diamete

Model a pollen grain as a sphere of carbon 0.12 mm in diameter. The density of carbon is 2300 kg/m3.

Part A

If two such grains, spaced 2.0 m apart, were somehow stripped of all their electrons, leaving only the protons, what would be the force between them?

Part B

Compare the force from part A with the weight of an aircraft carrier Fac, which is about 9×108 N

Solution

volume of each grain = 4/3 x 3.141 x (0.06x10^-3)^3 = 9.04 x 10^-13 m^3

mass of grain = volume x density = 9.04 x 10^-13 x 2300 = 2.0792 x 10^-9 kg

no of atoms of carbon present = (2.079 x 10^-9/12 x 10^-3) x6.023 x 10^23 atoms= 1.043 x 10^17 atoms

= 6.261 x 10^17 proton = 10 x 10^-2 C=0.1 C

force = 9 x 10^9 x 0.1 x 0.1 /4= 2.25 x 10^7 N

B. ratio of weight of aircraft carrier / force in A = 9 x 10^8 /2.25 x 10^7 = 40 times
