A histogram from diameter of rods manufactured from two machines is presented in the picture.
A. Based on the histogram, what would you conclude about these two machines?
B. If your manager wanted a measure of central tendency for these data, what would you tell her?
Histogram of the Diameter of Elevator Rails from Two Different Machines 0.4 0.35 0.3 0.25 0.2 0.15 0.1 0.05 Elevator Rail Diameter Solution
The two machines appear to have different mean/center. Distribution wise both are identical, except for the location-shift of 10 units as first machine is centered around 15 and second at 25.
To the manager, we would tell First machine has mode at 15.5 and second machne at 25.5 (mode is the tallest bar) Same is true for median because there are 6 bars, 3 bars on left have less height than 3 on right, so middle element must be in 4th bar.
