Describe the general role of ATP in the reaction show at the right. What would be the sign of the free energy change (delta G) for the reaction above going from left to right? (circle) [Positive or negative]. How can you tell? Look carefully at the reaction above (question #4). As the reaction progresses to the right, has entropy increased or decreased? Explain in one sentence.

Solution

(4) The reaction shows the Phosphorylation of glucose, ATP hydrolysis is coupled to phosphorylatio reaction. ATP donates a high energy phosphate group to glucose.

The phosphorylation adds a charged phosphate group so the glucose 6-phosphate cannot easily cross the cell membrane.

Phosphorylation of glucose. D-glucose + ATP D-glucose-6-phosphate + ADP. Go = -16.7 kj/mol

(5) ATP hydrolysis releases large amount of energy (delta G is negative) this reaction is coupled with phosphorylation reaction. Therefore the reaction is delta G negative

If delta G is negative, a reaction is said to be spontaneous; if delta G is positive, the reaction is non-spontaneous.

(6)If delta G is negative, energy is released. Entropy increases when net energy is released
