Two foursided dice are rolled One die has the numbers 1 2 3

Two four-sided dice are rolled. One die has the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. The other has the numbers 5, 6, 7, and 8. How many elements are in the sample space? Express the event \"the two dice sum to 8 as a set (show each of the possible combinations) What is the probability that the total showing is equal to eight?

Solution

Ans(1):

first dice can result in any one of 4 choices

second dice can result in any one of 4 choices

so total number of elements in sample space will be 4*4 that is 16

------------------------

Ans(2):

possible combinations having sum=8 using given digits are:

{(1,7),(2,6),(3,5)}

-----------------

Ans(3):

there are total 3 favorable events as shown in part b to get sum 8

hence required probability is 3/16
