A pipe fitters helper is stacking pipes on a storage rack and is beginning to have difficulty keeping up with the schedule allocated on the work order for this particular task. The supervisor suspects that the pipe fitters help is just lazy and raises his voice at the worker “encouraging” him to work faster!   You are the engineer in that area and suspect that the worker is just fatigued and just needs to rest, and not just a one-time rest period, but a work-rest regime should be established.   You ask the nurse to collect some heart rate information from the worker.   His initial heart rate while working was measured at 140 bpm. The nurse took several readings and you note that not only is the heart rate high, it is on an increasing trend. You recommend that the worker stop work and rest while the nurse continues to take heart rate readings. The first measurement after stopping was 135 beats per minute and then after 3 minutes of rest you see that the heart rate is 115 bpm. What do you conclude from these data and what would you recommend?

Solution

My suspicion that worker is under fatigue is correct

since worker heart rate is continuously increasing while he is working, this is due to that his body is getting tired

or fatigued due to repeated continuous work.

moreover heart rate is decreasing or getting controlled if he stops working which strengthens my suspicion that

worker is under fatigue
