Compared to the normal or average animal, there is a significant increase in muscle mass associated with a) the double-muscled beef animal and b) the rpST- treated pig. The increased mass in each condition is the result of very different processes. For each species, explain why the muscle (NOT THE MUSCLE FIBER) hypertrophy occurs, discussing any differences in energy metabolism.

Solution

the double muscled beef animal is a breed of catle that has undergone a mutation in the functioning of myostatin protein, myostatin protein is a protein which inhibits muscle cell growth or myogenesis, when this protein stops functioning, there is no stopping of the muscle cells or myogenesis.

the rpST pigs on the other hand have a different mechanism, pigs naturally produce the hormone porcine somatotropin pST. this hormone promotes muscle growth in pigs and leads to lesser fat and increased working efficiency. this hormone works best when the pig is atleast 120 pounds because at 100 pouns the pigs do not have much fat anyway, after this whent the pig ingests this hormone, it becomes inactive so the pigs need to be injected with pST every six weeks in order to produce more muscle and working efficiency.
