Discuss the challenges will be facing by warehouse management in addressing Industrial Revolution 4.0

You are chosen to design the internal layout for two different clients that just invested in regional hub. The product is a fast moving consumer goods and has a low shelf life.

a.     Pharmaceutical products.  

b.     Fresh seafood products

c.     explain the importance of information technology in warehouse

d.     Discuss the importance of looking at warehouses as a fulfillment center.

Solution

a: Pharmaceutical products:

The products required utmost care and most of the products are temperature sensitive. Thus in designing layout for warehouse on this pharmaproducts it cannot be stacked simply. Based on the nature and fragility of products stacking norms has to be made and products should be arranged with ample space. Movement of products will be critical and so sorting system is required to quickly despatch the products based on the orders received. WMS ( Warehouse management System) can be put in place with nature of products. Estimation of throuput levels of pharma would be different from that of other categories such as FMCG.

b: Sea food has persishability nature. Thus product stacking should be as simple as that with optimised space mechanism inorder to dispatch with less effort and minised time. Stirage space needs to be calculated based on the demand change into consideration and general throuput. SOme season sea food might be having more demand and sometimes less. Thus number inventories to be stored for shpu;d be plan accordingly because of the persishable nature and seasonality. Freezers or cold warehousing is defeintely required for Sea foods. Thus racking system inside freezers are the more feasible layout with horizontal stacking

c: Automatic Storage and Retrieval Sytstem ( ASRS) is one of the advanced technology using IT in warehouse and WMS also helps in accurate inventory tracking and supporting order management and production team on real time bassi about the requirement of inventories and their cycle counts.

dThe evolution of e commerce industry has started exploring utilisation of warehouse as a fulfilment center. The comopanyes use warehosue even as a cross docking center and distribution center rather than just storage center of goods. Fulfilment process comprises of managing order, prioritise shipments, generate shipment planning procedures a, co ordination with transporters and final dispatch of products. Thus warehouse can perform all the inter connected activities together to fulfil the orders through advanced technology. Managing inventories based on the real time demand and make the system more agile through warehouse management solutioning.
