• Since 9/11, airline security has been a major focus of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the US Government. Based on what you’ve read and learned in Chapter 5, discuss the following topics: o Part 1 - “Is it safe to fly? (You must show statistics and data to support your answer. You must compare it to other forms of transportation) o Part 2 – What security measures have been implemented since 9/11 and in your opinion, are the “extreme” security checks at our airports necessary?” List the safety precautions taken (body scans) and find research and statistics to prove your point. Hint: Visit any airline’s website for a list of banned products or items that can no longer be carried on the aircraft
Solution
Part 2-
After 9/11 terrorist attack, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which created the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and mandated that employees be in charge of airport security screening. More screeing procedures for passengers and their baggage where passengers pass through metal detectors, carry on bags are x-rayed and checked baggage passes through an explosive detection system, which has been implemented by TSA.
TSA has made three important changes to improve the efficiency of security screening operations:
Security consultant working with TSA to implement Behavior pattern recognition (BPR) programs at U.S. airports, if it is implemented widely it will add a very important security layer to aviation. This technique involves identifying passengers exhibiting suspicious behavior such as wearing heavy clothing on summers or excessive sweating.
The TSA is testing BPR program called Screening Passengers by Observation Technique (SPOT). Behavior detection mitigate threats against the travelling public, which is vital to TSA\'s layered approach to deter, detect and disrupt individuals who pose a threat to aviation.
After 9/11, In my opinion the extreme security checks at our airports is necessary though it increase waiting time for security but TSA has made an effort to reduce it.
Following safety precautions taken:
