There are multiple quality stategies, which one would you perfer and how would you implement it. How could you use the PAF Paradigm to implement improvement in manufacturing and service industry?
Solution
I will prefer to use Continuous Improvement strategy to improve quality. I will implement the same by choosing Kaizen projects in different areas of work. The projects will be distributed to team members in all the department with the target completion date and goal. Along with this, PAF strategy can be used to bring in improvement.
P = Prevention Cost = It is related to prevention of defects and generation of waste in manufacturing and service industry
A = Appraisal Cost = It is related to cost of measuring quality
F = Failure cost = It can be internal or external. The failure on line is internal and those after production process are external
The PAF can be implemented in both manufacturing and service industry. In manufacturing, the prevention cost can be computed by installing advance machinery which has lesser rate. The appraisal cost is the direct cost involved in cross checking of products. If we are able to ensure the high quality, then appraisal cost can be reduced. The failure cost is defect % before and after the process. The root cause analysis is essential to find out potential reasons for same. It needs to be monitored and tracked routinely
In service industry, prevention cost can be related to training of people to ensure minimum defect. The appraisal cost is the quality control monitoring by supervisor or quality feedback mechanism. The failure cost is during the service. In such case, both internal and external failure are having extremely high cost as it can ruin the customer experience and have loss of revenue. So, the failure rate should be close to zero in case of service industry.
