The following figure is a probability density curve that represents the lifetime, in months, of a certain type of laptop battery. Find the probability of randomly selecting battery with a lifetime of less than 20 months.

Solution

For a lifetime of less than 20 months, as per the graph it can fall in 2 categories;
a) lifetime between 0 to 10 months ; probability of which is = 0.14 (area in the graph of bell curve)
b) lifetime between 10 to 20 months; probability of which is = 0.29 (area in the graph of bell curve)

Thus total probability 0.14+0.29 = 0.43
Thus the probability of the battery of the laptop lasting less than 20 months is = 0.43
