Solution

Given that

2x + y = 5 ...................1

x - y = 13.........................2

From equation 1

y = 5 - 2x

Substitute   y = 5 - 2x in equation 2

   x - y = 13

x - ( 5 - 2x ) = 13

x - 5 + 2x = 13

3x - 5 = 13

3x = 13 + 5

3x = 18

x = 18/3

x = 6

Substitute x = 6 in equation 2

x - y = 13

6 - y = 13

6 - 13 = y

-7 = y

y = -7

Therefore ,

x = 6 , y = -7
