**Knowledge of Wireshark Software** One of your work tasks is to inventory all the software running on the network. You’ve been running Wireshark on your network for several weeks now. You’ve built a long list of all the source and destination port numbers seen on your network. As you examine this list, you find that there are more than 100 port numbers that are not listed on the IANA port list. There are also about 20 port numbers that belong to applications you know are not running on your network. What happened? Why are your research results so far off base?

Solution

These ports are Dynamic ports:Dynamic ports are used as temporary ports for specific communications.Once the communication with dynamic port ends it will be available for reuse for other communication.Dynamic ports are not registerd with IANA.Thats why these ports are not available in IANA list.

Ports are of mainly three types:Registerd,Well known and Dynamic.

Well known ports are ports range from 0-1023,

Registerd ports range from 1024-49151

Dynamic ports range from 49152-65535
