There are two reasons why executive support is more critical today than ever before,

the first isthat more critical function of sytem management are necessary to run contemporary data centers effectively,requiring more key resources and more mangement support to acquire them .During the initial growth of the use of computers several decades ago ,system management was not as critical a factor in the sucess of data center as it is today.

int the early seventies availiabilty and online response times were key measures of an effective data center functoons such as storage mangement ,capacity planning,chnage managment ,problem management were not measure factor in the equation for effective computers centers .

secondly,the infrasturcture of supports group of computer centers from two and three decades ago focused primarilly on technical issues .internal supports group were relatively associated from outside influnces such as executive managment ,end users and some extent even application software developer.what little conatct outside of IT taht many internal support personnal had was with hardware service engineers or s/w marketing representatives .today these internal groups are frequently bombarded with request from far more technically educated an dcomputer literate user community,including executives ,who are much more like to be technically astute than their counter parts from several years back.

This technical knowledge of the modern IT executive can be a two edged sword .many executives hav ejust enough technical knowledge to be budgetarily dangerous ,but not enough technical experience to fully appriciate te requirements and importance of well implemented infrastructure .

That is why executive support for sytem managment is so critical today.
