They were having a problem with Mission and asked him to come up with a way for them to focus on what\'s important. As a group experiment, he first asked them to reduce the mission statement to 16 words or less (they came up with \"Mastercard is a driving force at the heart of commerce enabling global transactions and speeding payments\"), then he had them reduce it to no more than 8 words (\"driving force enabling global transactions and speeding payments\"), then 4 words (\"global transactions/speeding payments\"), then 2 words (\"global payments\"). At that point, everyone was crystal clear about what made this company tick. They paid Thiagi $20k for the 2 hour session by the way; talk about speeding payments :-)

Solution

The activity that Thiagi performed is an example of management and flexibility showcasing and focusing on the primary objective. We observe that initially the the mission statement of mastercard was long which he made them reduce to 16 words then eventually to 8 words 4 words and finally to 2 words. The objective of this activity was to make them understand the importance of flexibility and instead of providing long mission statements the organization should focus on the primary objective and by cutting down the statement short it is proved that the shortest statement is the actual objective of the organization which is Global Payments in this context and that is the strength and also the unique selling point of the organization. The analysis of the statement is different and unique because we do not witness such an explanatory seesion that often and the way of explaining is also different and unique.
