The ratio is the relative sizes of two or more measurable quantities. For example, if the ratio of volumes of water in the 3 buckets 1:2:3 implies that if there is x Litres of water in bucket-1 then the water in bucket-2 is two times that of bucket-1 which is 2x and water in bucket-3 is 3 times that of bucket-1 which is 3x

The ratio is used quite oftenly in everday life. For example, for cooking rice the ratio of rice to water given is 1:2 implies for every x cup of rice there should be 2x cups of water. So if there are 3 cups of rice then we would need 6 cups of water. So ratios help us in cooking food.
