A garden has the form of a right triangle. One leg of the triangle is formed by a 1200 ft long sea wall. The hypotenuse of the triangle is 400 ft longer than the other leg. What are the dimensions of the garden?
The second leg is?
The hypotenuse is?
Solution
Given : One leg = 1200 ft
Let other leg = x
Then , hypotenuse = 400 + x
By Pyth theorem
(400 + x)2 = (1200)2 + x2
160000 + 800x + x2 = 1440000 + x2
160000 + 800x = 1440000
800x = 1440000 - 160000
800x = 1280000
x = 1280000/800
x = 12800/8
x = 1600
Hence, second leg is x = 1600 ft
and hypotenuse is = 400 + x
putting the value of x in hypotenuse , we get:
Hypotenuse = 400 + 1600
Hence, Hypotenuse = 2000 ft
Hence, dimensions are :
1600ft, 1200ft, 2000 ft [ Answer ]
