Share your thoughts in 250 words on the the following statement. Should firms take stances on political issues? Does your current or previous employer take a stand on political issues?
Solution
The answer to this question is 100% dependent on the audience you are marketing to.
I think it\'s healthy for the brand identity to be involved in political issues. People these days become attached to brands. A lot of times, these brands are like people to them. Standing for a political cause can strengthen this.
I think brands should be involved and make a stand. Humanizing brands is a necessary means to cutting through the cluttered marketing/advertising world. I am pleased to see so many took a (positive) stand recently. It can be tricky, absolutely. There will always be black, white and grey areas here. These brands may have lost some customers but they gained some at the same time. It is something each brand needs to review the pros and cons on before acting.
Well, being active in a controversial topic like this one, can be a double-edged sword. Involvement in political issues is not the factor that earns money for the company and it isn\'t the reason why people choose to use its products or services..
I worked at MasterCard last year. From the inside, they are extremely committed to tackling diversity issues and encouraging a diverse workplace. A perfect example of being careful about how you go about it. To me, it was a genuine reminder of the efforts they put around their workplace diversity. To someone outside the organization, it\'s seen as capitalizing on a political issue.
All in all, I believe it\'s up to the brand to use their better judgment to avoid angering existing members and throwing fuel into a fire.
