In Chesapeake Bay, what prohibits oxygenation of bottom waters?
A- lack of phytoplankton production at the surface
B- strong upwelling and mixing of bottom waters with surface waters
C- large influxes of cold water to the bay
D- stable stratification of the water column
E- All of the above
I tried E but the answer is wrong could u plz help ty.
Solution
Ans D stable stratification of the water column
It is due to division between water flowing in from ocean and out of the bay\'s freshwater rivers and streams. Ovean water is salty and cooler whereas river water is warmer and fresh, so river water floats above ocean water. A boundary called as pycnocline is created which prevents the mixing of these waters. This creates large areas of no oxygen at the bottom of bay.
