Solve the following problem using a system of equations. How many pounds of nuts selling dor $9 per lb and raisins selling for $3 per lb should a person combine to obtain 60 lb of a trail mix selling for $5 per lb? The person would need lb of nuts selling for $9 and lb of raisins selling for $3. (Type whole numbers.)

Solution

Call the amount of nuts , X

Then the amount of raisins must be 60-x

Then the euation is 9X + 3(60 - X) = 5(60)

9X + 180 - 3X = 300

6X = 300 -180

6X =120

X = 20

The number of nuts = 20

The number of risins = 60 - 20

= 40
